United Sets New 45-Minute Check-In Deadline for Domestic Passengers

United Airlines is raising the bar for punctuality this summer, rolling out a new rule that could easily catch latecomers off guard. Starting June 3, anyone flying domestically with United—without checked bags—must complete their check-in at least 45 minutes before takeoff, up from the old 30-minute rule. If you’re used to cutting it close at the airport, you may want to reset your routine.

This shift isn’t coming out of the blue. Other major carriers like Delta have already tightened their policies, mainly to streamline their operations and keep flights running on time. United says its goal is consistency: making the check-in cutoff for all domestic travelers (whether they have bags or not) line up with when you’d need to drop off checked luggage. For those flying internationally, you’re still looking at a 60-minute deadline—so no changes there.

Still, it’s not a one-size-fits-all rule. United points out that certain airports or flights may come with unique check-in times. Layover-heavy hubs and airports prone to heavy traffic could see even earlier deadlines. The bottom line: always double-check those airport screens and the fine print in your booking details. If you don’t meet the new cutoff, United warns that your seat could be forfeit or your reservation canceled. The airline says it will help rebook travelers when possible, but there’s no guarantee you’ll make your planned trip if you’re late.

This policy tweak isn’t happening in a vacuum. We’re heading straight into the heart of the busy summer travel season, and the Federal Aviation Administration predicts the busiest stretch for airports in 15 years. United is bracing for a flood of travelers, and the tighter deadline is part of the airline’s effort to keep passengers—and planes—moving efficiently. Check-in policy changes are also a response to bigger crowds and longer security lines as vacationers return in record numbers.

If you haven’t traveled in a while, there are other new wrinkles to watch out for. The Transportation Security Administration now officially advises you show up at least two hours before domestic flights and three for international trips to clear those growing security checkpoints. And don’t forget about the new REAL ID rules: as of May, you need a compliant state ID, passport, or something like a Global Entry card for all domestic flights. Regular old driver’s licenses that don’t meet these standards just won’t cut it anymore.

With flight demand high and rules changing to keep up, travelers have to be sharper than ever at planning ahead. Missing these new deadlines might not just mean a rushed sprint to the gate—it could mean missing your vacation altogether. It’s United’s way of nudging flyers to think early, move early, and beat the summer chaos.
