America's First Board Game: Inside the 1822 ‘Travellers’ Tour’ That Mapped a Young Nation

A 1991 archival discovery rewrote U.S. board game history. The 1822 ‘Travellers’ Tour Through the United States,’ made by New York mapmakers F. & R. Lockwood, is now recognized as America’s earliest printed board game. Players spun a teetotum, named cities across 24 states, and raced to New Orleans. For decades, Parker Brothers had credited ‘The Mansion of Happiness’ (1843) as first.
